Anchor learning to local climate action phenomena and climate actions
Example: Climate Change and Drought
Fifth grade students learned about the drought that is gripping the western United States and the many stakeholders that are affected by water scarcity. Students researched and role played as a water stakeholder and learned about how a limited water supply affects them. Then, they practiced listening to someone else share their perspective. Learning included the realization that a limited water supply is affecting businesses, farmers, cities, recreation providers, Indigenous peoples, plants, and animals, and that all of these stakeholders must work together to share a limited resource.
Interested students advocated for water conservation in their presentation to the Colorado Water Board on May 18, 2022. Student presentation is near the 1 hr. 20 minute mark.
