A lifelong teacher and educator, Anne has spent most of her adult life in classrooms, working with teachers and kids.  She began teaching on the south side of Chicago, later returning to graduate school at the University of Chicago and then the University of Illinois to earn a Ph.D in curriculum and instruction. A move to Colorado led to professional development work with Denver’s Public Education Coalition, a non-profit supporting progressive literacy practices in both inner city and suburban schools and districts. With Stephanie Harvey, she has written books and resources on reading comprehension instruction, including Strategies That Work: Teaching Comprehension for Understanding, Engagement and Building Knowledge. (Stenhouse, 3 rd edition, 2017). The Comprehension Toolkit, a K-6 literacy resource (Heinemann, 2017), is used in schools and districts across the country. Most recently, with co-authors Stephanie Harvey and Brad Buhrow, Anne created Inquiry Illuminated, a resource for teaching inquiry and research across the curriculum (Heinemann, 2019). She and Stephanie also collected and wrote a series of nonfiction texts for American history. These resources focus on unrecognized but exciting and compelling people, events and stories that highlight why history matters. Anne is passionate about advocating for ways for kids to explore the big, fascinating world out there—whether it’s within their schools or, even better, beyond the four walls of the classroom. As a regular volunteer in C4CA classrooms, she is committed to the project's vision and loves helping to make it happen with kids.
